Couple relaxing on a beach lounger with a pina colada at an all-inclusive resort

At your first all-inclusive resort, the rate covers your room, the buffet and a la carte restaurants, house drinks, the pools and beach, non-motorized water sports and the nightly entertainment. Off-property excursions, spa treatments, top-shelf bottles and private romantic dinners usually cost extra. Room service, tips, and airport transfers vary by resort. Whether the trip is a honeymoon, a babymoon or an anniversary, knowing which items your resort covers before you book is what keeps the final bill close to the price you were quoted.

We have been traveling the Caribbean together for more than 20 years, and Heather books all-inclusive trips for couples through Flow Voyages, so she hears the same first-timer surprises from clients. If you are still deciding which kind of resort fits the two of you, start with our guide to booking a couples-only resort, then check what "included" covers at the resorts on your shortlist.

What Your All-Inclusive Rate Covers, What Costs Extra And What To Ask Your Travel Advisor Before You Book

The basics of an all-inclusive rate in Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica are similar. The differences show up in the extras and how they are handled when it comes to pricing communicated to the guests. This shifts with the resort's price tier and brand so what's included as a standard amenity in one resort might be a paid upcharge at another. Anything in the right-hand column is a question for the resort or your travel advisor before you book.

ItemUsually IncludedExtra Or Depends On The Resort
Food The buffet, the snack bars and the a la carte restaurants. Specialty restaurants with a surcharge and premium menu items.
Drinks House and mid-shelf cocktails, local beer, house wine and soft drinks. Top-shelf liquor, bottles from the wine list, and champagne, which are often reserved for a club-level upgrade.
Room Service Included at many resorts, sometimes 24 hours a day. A delivery charge, limited hours or a short menu at others.
On-Property Activities Pools, beach, kayaks, paddleboards, snorkel gear, fitness classes and nightly shows. Motorized water sports like jet skis and parasailing, which are usually paid by the ride.
Excursions Rarely included, with a few brand exceptions. Off-property tours, priced per person.
Spa Sometimes a hydrotherapy circuit or the steam room. Massages, facials and couples treatments.
Romance Extras Rarely included, so ask what a honeymoon or anniversary booking gets you. Private beach dinners, photo packages and room decorations.
Tips And Transfers Both are included at Sandals and Couples resorts in Jamaica. Most resorts in Mexico and the Dominican Republic include these (technically), and airport transfers are often booked separately. However, Tipping is almost always heavily encouraged or functionally required at many resorts and can add a significant cost to your trip if not budgeted properly.
Babymoon Basics Mocktails, fresh juices and soft drinks at the bar. Whether the spa offers prenatal massage, whether a doctor is on site, and how far the nearest hospital is.

Activities In The Brochure Are Often Tours You Pay For

The most common first-timer surprise is finding out that the snorkel trip, the catamaran cruise and the cenote swim on the resort website are paid excursions, and a Chichen Itza day tour from Cancun starts around $125 per person. Resort websites list everything that happens on or near the property, and many don't mark which activities cost extra. The included program sits on the property: the pools and beach, the non-motorized water sports and the daily schedule run by the entertainment team.

A few brands go further. Some Couples Resorts properties in Jamaica include select outings, such as a catamaran cruise or a trip to Dunn's River Falls, and Sandals includes scuba for certified divers and green fees at its golf courses in Jamaica and on Great Exuma. Terms vary by property and length of stay, so check the specific resort. If off-property adventures matter to you both, they may be worth more than a fancier room at a resort that charges for everything.

If one of you wants a day of golf or a fishing charter while the other wants the spa, plan both before you go. Our sister site ManTripping has a guide to what all-inclusive resorts leave out when it comes to golf, fishing and diving that is worth sending to the golfer in the relationship.

Spa Time, Top-Shelf Alcohol And Private Dinners Is Where "All Included" Starts To Unravel

Spa treatments are almost always extra, even at resorts with a free hydrotherapy circuit, and couples massages are priced per person. The included bar pours house and mid-shelf brands, so a bottle of good champagne for your anniversary night is usually an extra charge or part of a club-level upgrade. Ask what the club level adds before paying for it, since the difference is sometimes a few labels and a private lounge.

Romance extras follow the same pattern. A private dinner on the beach, a photo session at sunset and flowers in the room are sold as add-ons at most resorts. Tell the resort you are on a honeymoon or anniversary trip when you book, ask what you get at no charge, and price the rest before you land.

Room Service, Tips And Airport Transfers Are Not Always Included

Room service policies vary more than first-timers expect. If one of you is under the weather, that policy decides whether the other spends the afternoon running back and forth to the buffet, so ask about it before you book, especially for a babymoon. Our guide to what to do when one of you gets sick on vacation covers the rest of that plan.

Most all-inclusive rates in Mexico and the Dominican Republic don't include tips, and even when they say they do, the reality is that tipping is required to get the level of service you'd expect from an All-Inclusive Resort. Recent guidance for Mexico is around 20 pesos, roughly a dollar, per drink at the bar and about 50 pesos a day for housekeeping, with more for drivers on airport transfers. This is more common at lower-cost resorts than it is at more expensive ones but the general rule is that unless it is explicitly told to you that it's the resort's policy that tipping is not needed, expect to give your bartender, waiter, activities team etc. a few dollars each time they do something for you.

Some brands work the other way. Sandals prohibits tips for all staff except butlers, and Couples Resorts has a no-tipping policy at its Jamaica resorts. Both include airport transfers in Jamaica, while many resorts in Mexico and the Dominican Republic do not, and Couples asks for your flight details at least seven days ahead. Check transfers at any resort you compare, since a private van from the airport is an easy-to-miss line item when you compare two rates.

Some Resort "Free Amenities" Come With A Sales Pitch Attached

At some resorts, the welcome credit, the "VIP" orientation or the invitation to tour a sister property is the start of a vacation club or timeshare presentation. The credit is real, but collecting it can take up a morning of your honeymoon, and declining it repeatedly gets old.

Decide together before you land whether either of you is interested. If not, one polite, firm "no thank you, we are not interested in any presentations" at check-in usually ends it.

Do A Vibe Check Before You Book To Make Sure The Resort Caters To What You're Looking For On A Romantic Getaway

The entertainment program is included, but the crowd shapes the trip as much as the room does. Upscale, romance-focused resorts tend to draw an older crowd, and the evening program can wind down early. Budget resorts skew younger and louder, and the feel of the same property can shift with spring break, holiday and wedding-group weeks.

Before you book, email the resort three questions: what the entertainment schedule looks like for your exact week, whether the nightclub is open every night or only on weekends, and whether any large wedding or incentive groups are booked while you are there. Then read reviews posted from the same month last year, since a resort in February and the same resort in July can draw a different crowd.

Why The All-Inclusive Label Means Less At Some Resorts Today

All-inclusive resorts run from budget to luxury, and the label covers less at the lower tiers than many couples expect. That expectation comes from Jamaica: Club Med, founded in 1950, is usually credited with the idea, but after Sandals opened its first couples-only resort in Montego Bay in 1981, Sandals, Couples and their neighbors turned "everything is included" into the American honeymoon standard.

A mid-tier resort in Cancun or Punta Cana is closer to a mainstream cruise ship than to a fine hotel: good value, decent food, long lines at peak times and a steady stream of offers to upgrade. A luxury all-inclusive costs considerably more per night and includes more of the items listed as extra in the table. Brand names do not settle it, since large hotel companies run several tiers under related names, so read reviews from the last three months and search them for "extra charge," "room service" and "timeshare."

Add Excursions, Tips And Transfers To The Nightly Rate Before You Compare Two Resorts

This is where working with a travel advisor can be a real benefit - rather than you arriving tired and hungry at your resort and being met with hands out expecting a tip, or an upcharge for that fancy dinner you saw on their TikTok page - a travel advisor will be able to have already prepared you for what is and isn't included at the resort you chose to book and why sometimes it's worth paying a little extra for an "Ultra Luxry" resort where everything you're hoping to do, see, eat, drink, and experience is actually truly "All Included".

The simple reality is that this can be a very confusing process and two resorts with the same nightly rate can land hundreds of dollars apart once the trip is built. Before you compare prices, sit down together and pick the one paid excursion you each want, the spa treatment or private dinner you would book for the big night, and a week of tips. Add those and the airport transfer to each resort's rate, and compare the totals.

If you would rather hand that homework to someone who books these trips for couples, Heather can match a resort to the two of you through Flow Voyages. Call her at 630-779-9301 or email Heather@FlowVoyages.com and tell her what the trip is for. A honeymoon, a babymoon and a 25th anniversary each point to a different resort.
